About Ultrasound
What is Ultrasound Imaging?
Our practice offers both Obstetric and Gynecologic ultrasound imaging with state of the art ultrasound equipment, including three-dimensional (3-D) and four-dimensional (4-D) imaging. All imaging is performed in the comfort of a private suite within our offices. Ultrasound imaging, also known as sonography, is a method of obtaining diagnostic images of either the fetus or the female reproductive organs through the use of high frequency sound waves.
Obstetric Ultrasound
Obstetrical ultrasounds are conveniently offered in both of our offices at anytime during your pregnancy should a problem arise. A standard examination to assess the fetus is performed between 18-20 weeks gestation. This study evaluates fetal position, cardiac activity, placental location and an assessment of the fetal anatomy. This “anatomic survey” evaluates the fetal brain, chest, heart, abdomen, spine and extremities.Gynecologic Ultrasound
Gynecologic ultrasounds are also conveniently offered in both of our offices 5 days a week. The examination usually includes both a transabdominal and transvaginal study of the female reproductive organs. The transvaginal study often permits a more accurate detailed evaluation of the women’s internal organs.
What to expect during this procedure?
Either examination usually takes less than 30 minutes to perform. While most ultrasounds are painless, some women experience minimal discomfort when required to fill their bladders prior to the examination. After being positioned on the exam table, a clear gel is applied and the technologist firmly presses the transducer against the skin, moving it back and forth to image the area of interest. Comfortable, loose-fitting clothing is recommended.
